| MEDAK TB Eradication
Program: A CASE STUDY |
The Background
In the Health sector Sevabharathi has been active in treating the slum and remotely located needy people. And incidentally these are the people most affected by TB (Tuberculosis). And The first effort to fight the dreaded disease was initiated in the year 2000 with co-operation from the then collector of Medak Smt. Shanta Kumari. The District had a prominence also as it was selected as the pilot project for implementing the NTCP and then the RNTCP. Sevabharathi volunteered to compliment the govt. efforts. Medak district according to government statistics was 3,116 strong in TB but the actual figures show 5,300 patients affected by TB.

Training and Capacity building
All together 300 volunteers of community health were
trained as Dots and the Supervisors to take the mission
ahead. The reggular training program is a mix of updates
on TB the work review and the field experiences. A field
visit is a must. Every three moths Sevabharathi district
TB unit sits to take part in the training of the volunteers
and the public relation exercise. A monthly training
program with co-operation from specialists in TB and
chest specialist are conducted. The main focus area
in the district are the two zones Mirzapoor, Sangareddy
with 20 PHCs. The organisation has a full fledged network
in the two zones.
The World TB day celebration on 23rd
March is an annual event for the past 3 years. And the

teams working in the area of TB eradication in Urban

rural areas of Bhainsa in Adilabad and the Gokavaram
in Kurnool dt.
Other efforts in Health worth mention
are the mobile medical missions, the Community health

TB has
been a very dangerous disease according to an estimate
TB KILLS more than all other diseases combined together.
To start with a school teacher retired in a small village
was teaching voluntarily some kids. and one of the kids
was a reggular absentee , when enuired of the reason
it was found that the kids father was a TB patient and
in the Kids own language TRULY "A bhooth has taken
my father" Thus started the teachers quest for
a solution for the kid to attend the school reggularly.

And ended with a VOLUNTARY
TB ERADICATION PROJECT that has clearly eradicted TB
in 27 patients (NOT a BIG NUMBER THOUGH) but an earnest
begining. Now the Team SEVABHARATHI MEDAK is working
in 230 PHCs and equal no:of Villages.
The District collector was surprised to know of the
voluntary effort (with out Govt. funding) and has issued
a Notice to the effect calling for all the Govt. Phc
staff to work with SEVABHARATI Volunteers (THANK YOU
COLLECTOR).
ANOTHER EFFORT worth mention is from
Kurnool where a group of Doctors were motivated by the
local SEVABHARATI Volunteer to work for TB ERADICATIOn
when the later found that the SLUM in which he has been
working long as a CHILD COUNSELLING CENTRE incharge
is affected by TB the KING OF DISEASES. THUS came out
an INITIATIVE that has now come under little control.
Also a similar effort has been going on in Nandyal.
A full fledged 10 bedded Hospital is
working tirelessly in the interiors of the Kurnool dist.
near Atmakoor. THE GUNAMPALLI NARAYANAMMA HOSPITAL supported
by the G Pullareddy Charitable trust is working on tirelessly
to eradicate TB in the Tribals (CHENCHUS) with full
fledged state of the Art equipment and staff.
